10 year old Ida Jensen and her parents leave poverty in Denmark in 1880 to emmigrate to North America on the promise of the chance to build a homestead and make a new life. The trip is long and tough: with a death at sea, the addition of new family members and new partnerships along the way. Together the group overcomes the hardships of highway robbers, weather and the uncertainty of collaborating with a neighbouring Indian tribe, once they settle to claim their piece of wilderness. Ida, in her ever-positive and sunny manner, must learn a new language and new customs. She finds the New World is an exciting but dangerous place.
